A government authority needed to develop a strategic workforce plan to position it so it could take advantage of new business opportunities and to ensure it remained a provider of choice for government services. The plan also needed to maximise the efficiencies and role changes needed with recent work process and system improvements. We worked in partnership with the head of Corporate Services and with the Senior Executive Team and undertook research on the changing business needs. We facilitated a management workshop and consulted with key managers to identify the current and future capability needs. We reviewed the workforce profile and identified specific risks and exposures to business continuity for the future. We prepared a comprehensive report recommending changes to roles and structures to sustain the business over time and to strengthen workforce mobility and flexibility. The workforce plan is now driving operational planning and the HR strategies needed to build capability in key roles. The planning process was highly regarded and ensured ownership of the outcomes desired with sponsorship by the CEO.
